Metro Seniors in Action: a case study of a citywide senior organization

DC Reitzes and DC Reitzes
Georgia State University, Atlanta 30303.

This in-depth case study of Metro Seniors in Action, a Chicago coalition of senior groups, investigates a citywide, instrumental organization. The experiences of Metro Seniors suggest that seniors are able to: (1) establish citywide networks but need the continuous involvement of local groups; (2) create a broad coalition with democratic governance but require a professional staff; and (3) effectively advocate the interests of seniors, but must continue to use confrontation and lobbying strategies to maintain influence.
